PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 20, 2022

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) turned its attention to the hiring process in the most recent Biz Zone webinar, hosted on Tuesday. April 19, 2022. The participants were implored to devise a plan when seeking to expand their employee recruitment strategy. The session was under the theme “Hiring to Scale: A Team for Your Dream.” HR Consultant with the Human Resource Management Association of Jamaica, Miss. Joni-Gaye Cawley was the presenter for Tuesday’s webinar.

Miss Cawley said, “A strategic plan of action is critical to properly fulfilling the staffing needs and desires of your business, which will lead to new business growth.” She continued, “You need a strong hiring strategy to build an engaged workforce that will give your business a competitive advantage.”

When beginning to craft a hiring strategy Miss Cawley encouraged participants to ask themselves these questions “What does your business look like today? What is your mission and vision and where do you want to be? She went on to say “identify the gaps in between and ask yourself how do you get to where you want to be, what type of people do you need to accomplish this vision?”

Continuing, she said “You must identify your hiring needs, what are the long-term plans for expansion, what are skills and experiences needed? Highlighting hiring needs, Miss Cawley mentioned that “you must consider how quickly you need to expand and how many employees do you need to accomplish this?” She further advised participants that “a hiring plan should include level of knowledge, areas of expertise and background you are looking for.”

Miss Cawley concluded by encouraging participants to “stay away from recruiting critical roles yourself but instead enlist the help of trained professionals.” She went on to let participants know that they must focus on hiring for the “right fit” for their vision as well as their company culture. Finally, she pointed out “A strong part of a successful hiring strategy lies in understanding your specific hiring challenges.”

The robust presentation also covered how to identify where a company is on the business lifecycle spectrum, key hiring principles and mistakes, how to build an employer brand as well as understanding and explaining the hiring process.
