“If a person needed this service, they would probably have to travel into Kingston or St. Catherine. So, I saw that need… and I got certified for it, which means that I can now help them in a better way.”
That realisation changed everything for Annakay Lowe-Stultz. After more than a decade working in hospitals, she saw a glaring gap in Jamaica’s healthcare system, especially for patients in rural areas who needed specialised physiotherapy services. The solution? Total Care Wellness & Rehab Solutions Limited, a company built to make essential healthcare more accessible.
What started in 2021 as a small rehab supply store soon grew into something much bigger. By March 2022, Total Care had evolved into a fully operational wellness centre, offering comprehensive physiotherapy services, including the only certified pelvic floor physiotherapy treatment available outside of Kingston and St. Catherine.
More Than Just Physiotherapy
Located in Manchester, Total Care’s services go beyond standard physiotherapy. Pelvic floor physiotherapy, a field often overlooked, helps patients regain control over bladder, bowel, and sexual function. This treatment is crucial for men recovering from prostate surgery and women dealing with postpartum challenges or pelvic organ prolapse.
“If a man has removed his prostate… they’re going to have issues with controlling their urine and also having erectile dysfunction, which is something that we have to work with and work on for them.”
Recognising the urgent need for these services, Total Care’s founder sought specialised training, ensuring that patients across the island could receive care without the burden of travelling long distances.
But healing isn’t just physical, it’s mental and nutritional too. That’s why Total Care has expanded into a one-stop wellness hub, integrating mental health support, nutrition guidance, and general physiotherapy for musculoskeletal conditions.
“Most times, we talk about these things. Patients need proper nutrition; patients need mental health care… So, I have a psychologist on hand, I have a nutritionist who works out of the office.”
Total Transformation with Tech
Passion and expertise were never an issue for Total Care. But as the business grew, it became clear that digital transformation was the key to scaling efficiently.
That’s where the Digital Jamaica Training came in. Despite already using some digital tools, the training revealed new ways to enhance efficiency, cybersecurity, and patient management.
For women looking to enhance their businesses through technology, the Digital Jamaica training offers an invaluable opportunity. With 2700 persons to be trained by the year 2026, 40 per cent of the cohort must be women.
“The things that I did in this training, I’m like, ‘God, I didn’t know about these things!’”
One of the biggest lessons? The importance of secure digital record-keeping.
“I’ve been trying to figure out ways to transition the business more digitally… I was just going to apply for [an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system], but then I realised I didn’t have the right security measures in place.”
An EMR is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart, containing medical history, diagnoses, medications, and other relevant information, used primarily within a single healthcare practice.
The training emphasised cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive patient data, something that had not been top of mind.
“I would not have had [security protocols] in place to make sure that my clients’ and patients’ data is protected. So, at least from that training, it let me see things differently.”
Armed with this knowledge, Total Care is now working with a website developer to implement an integrated Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, streamlining patient interactions and optimising operations.
With JBDC, It’s a Win!
“JBDC is doing so much for my business. They pass on information, and I get to decide what’s right for me. That’s something I truly appreciate.”
Long before the Digital Jamaica Training, Lowe-Stultz had been introduced to the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC). The connection came through a recommendation from another successful JBDC client.
“I first reached out to JBDC in 2022 or 2023, but juggling everything became overwhelming, so I had to step back. But last year, when they moved conveniently right beside me, I took it as a sign!”
JBDC connected her with opportunities.
“For example, I didn’t even know there was a pitch competition happening at the MSME Business Roadshow until I got the email from JBDC. If I hadn’t seen that email, I wouldn’t have applied—and I wouldn’t have won!”
