Micro, Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of Jamaica’s economy, but when it comes to exporting, they hit a wall. Why? Because exporting is like a puzzle where the pieces are tariffs, regulations, trade agreements, logistics, and a whole lot of paperwork.
As the agency driving entrepreneurial success, the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) partners with other government entities and private sector to take entrepreneurs ‘From Concept to Market’.
One such entity is the Trade Board Limited, one of JBDC’s sister agencies. Through the provision of relevant trade-related information, the issuance, and regulation of trade licenses and certification, The Trade Board Limited, takes MSMEs across borders to export success. Basically, they give MSMEs an export roadmap so they don’t get lost on their way to international trade.
“Many entrepreneurs dream of expanding their businesses beyond borders,” JBDC’s Chief Executive Officer (Acting) Harold Davis says, “but many are faced with a maize of regulations and not knowing where to start and a fear of the unknown, makes the idea of exporting overwhelming. This [Export Academy] changed this perspective forever.”
Trade Board’s Export Academy was recently launched to help MSMEs put that puzzle together. The Entrepreneur Weekly presents 5 ways the Export Academy supports MSMEs:
1. Customised Training for Small Businesses
Not all businesses are the same. A small coffee producer has different export hurdles than a fashion designer. The academy offers sector-specific training to help each MSME understand the exact export process for their industry.
2. Trade Agreement Guidance
Many MSMEs don’t realise that Jamaica has trade agreements that could lower tariffs and make exports cheaper. EXPORT Academy provides insights on agreements like CARICOM, so MSMEs don’t overpay on duties or miss out on tax breaks.
3. Step-by-Step Export Process
For many MSMEs, the biggest issue isn’t product quality—it’s paperwork. EXPORT Academy walks MSMEs through:
- How to register as an exporter
- Understanding export permits and licenses
- Shipping logistics (freight forwarding, customs, etc.)
- Accessing financing options for exporters
4. Access to International Markets
One of the toughest processes for MSMEs is finding buyers overseas. The academy connects businesses to export promotion agencies and directories, giving them exposure to potential customers outside Jamaica.
5. Removing the Fear of Exporting
Many MSMEs think exporting is only for big companies. EXPORT Academy demystifies the process and breaks it down so even a small business with one employee can start selling internationally.
Supporting the creation of an enabling business environment is one of JBDC’s strategic imperatives. Through partnerships like the one with The Trade Board Limited, the JBDC acts as a bridge connecting entrepreneurs and the many opportunities available in other entities to foster growth, sustainability, and competitiveness among Jamaican MSMEs.
