While Artificial Intelligence (AI) can seem intimidating to some, it is exciting for others, and several global businesses have led the way in AI application in various areas of their operation and have seen gamer-changing results.

Beyond popular applications like Chat GPT, Grok or Gemini, Artificial Intelligence driven by data can transform various, primarily through intelligent automation, predictive analytics, and hyper-personalisation.

The Entrepreneur Weekly shows how they did it and how you can too.

Amazon

Amazon has built a reputation on convenience, and AI is a major reason why.  Amazon leverages AI to streamline customer service through chatbots and virtual assistants. These systems, powered by natural language processing, are able to understand and respond to customer queries in real time, reducing response time and operational pressure.

    Walmart

Walmart uses AI for inventory management. Instead of waiting on demand, the company predicts it. By analysing historical sales data alongside external factors like seasonal trends and even weather patterns, AI systems forecast what products will be needed and when.

    Netflix

Ever notice how Netflix always seems to “get” what you want to watch next?  It is AI analysing viewing habits, preferences and behaviour patterns to serve highly personalised recommendations.

Using machine learning models, the platform studies user behaviour.  IBM [International Business Machines] defines “Machine learning as the subset of artificial intelligence (AI) focused on algorithms that can “learn” the patterns of training data and, subsequently, make accurate inferences about new data.”

So, what people watch, how long they watch, what they rate and translate that into tailored content suggestions. This level of personalisation increases engagement and keeps users on the platform longer.

    Tesla

Tesla’s self-driving system uses computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning to navigate roads, but more importantly, it improves over time by learning from real-world driving data. This creates a feedback loop where every use strengthens the system.

    Starbucks

Starbucks uses AI to understand its customers on a deeper level. Through its mobile app, the company delivers personalised recommendations based on purchase history while also using data to optimise inventory and supply chain operations.

    UPS

For United Parcel Service (UPS), AI is solving the logistical problem of how to deliver faster and more efficiently.  Its routing system analyses traffic conditions, delivery windows and locations to determine the most efficient paths for drivers.

The outcome is reduced fuel consumption, improved delivery times and greater reliability. For MSMEs, it shows how AI can identify inefficiencies that are often invisible in day-to-day operations.

    Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola uses AI to stay ahead of the game.  By analysing social media data and customer feedback, the company identifies emerging trends and uses these insights to guide both marketing strategies and product development. This allows for quicker decision-making and more targeted campaigns.

How to Digitally Transform Your Business

What’s the lesson here? Businesses that we know and trust are using AI to their advantage. And increasingly, the businesses that win are the ones that learn, adapt and act.  The Jamaica Business Development Corporation’s (JBDC) online learning platform JBDC Biz Wiz gives MSMEs the opportunity to learn the language of business and stay ahead of the changing business environment.

AI presents an opportunity for entrepreneurs to grow smarter and is truly a competitive advantage. How to Digitally Transform Your Business is a course on the JBDC Biz Wiz platform that teaches you how to apply tools like AI in your business.
