Brands redefining skincare, sustainability at Expo Ja
Jamaican entrepreneurs are shaking up the health, wellness and creative industries with locally-made products infused with natural ingredients and developed using eco-friendly practices.
Among this upscaling are Shevielle’s Naturals, De Silva Hall Designs, and Skin by Indie Luxury Artisans, three businesses redefining skincare and sustainability.
Shevielle Candice, the founder of Shevielle’s Naturals, says that she is passionate about providing high-quality, Jamaican-made skincare and haircare products. The brand focuses on health and wellness, offering a range of items designed to enhance skin glow, hair growth, and overall well-being.
“Our products are Jamaican-made with local ingredients like our castor [oil] and neem water [and include the] aloe and oats face wash, and turmeric and oats sugar scrub,” Candice shared. Shevielle’s Naturals is available at various locations across Jamaica, including Devon House’s Shop for Proactive Lifestyle and VBS Beauty Supplies in Portmore.
Candice emphasises the importance of patience and consistency when adopting a natural skincare routine.
“If you’re ready to start your natural journey, we provide natural products and the support you need to get started.”
For beginner skincare, she offers encouragement. “Many people give up prematurely because they think results will come in two or four weeks. But it takes time and consistency,” she explained. “To get started, I recommend our aloe and oats face wash, which is great for acne, eczema, and sensitive skin, followed by our oats and neem moisturising cream.”
Belinda Hall, the creative mind behind De Silva Hall Designs has turned her passion for sustainability into a thriving business. Using recycled materials, she transforms discarded wine bottles, Blue Mountain coffee jars, and burlap into exquisite home décor pieces.
“I specialise in recycled materials – taking trash and turning it into treasure,” Hall said. “These are empty wine bottles that would normally end up in the garbage, and I repurpose them into lamps, vases, and centrepieces.”
Hall gives credit to the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) for helping her refine her craft and improve her packaging. Her work is now available in resorts like Sandals, Things Jamaican stores, and even airports.
“There’s no printing involved, everything is hand-painted stroke by stroke,” she noted. “I never had formal training, but I was born with this talent, and I keep improving.”
Tracy-Ann Mayers, owner of Skin by Indie Luxury Artisans, has spent four years redefining organic skincare by turning it into a luxury brand. Her brand is known for high-quality, naturally infused products, including an extensive coffee-based skincare line.
“We specialise in organic skincare but on the luxury side of life,” Mayers explained. “Our French Mocha line uses raw Jamaican coffee, not just coffee fragrance, so you get the full benefits of caffeine for revitalizing the skin and reducing cellulite and stretch marks.”
Their product line-up also includes the Sunshine and Rain turmeric and oat collection, the Sultry Wish Come True line, and the playful Strawberry Muffin set. One of their best-sellers, Sun Kissed, is a dual-action moisturiser with naturally occurring SPF, while Super Fruit is packed with pomegranate seed oil, raspberry, and CoQ10 enzyme to boost collagen when applied topically, as it is already found in our bodies.
“We’ve been in business for four years and supply the Grand Bahia Principe Hotel for their spa products,” Mayers said. “If you visit their spa, you’ll be using our skincare.”
An exhibition and trade show showcasing Jamaican-made products and services, Expo Jamaica opened yesterday at the National Arena and the National Indoor Sports Centre in St Andrew and closes on Sunday.
