Page 1 of 5 As Jamaican made products from the MSME sector enters the competitive world marketplace, the need to have products of a certain standard is very critical. The technical services unit is geared towards assisting clients in developing products that meet very high standards. The unit seeks to assist clients in finding ways to develop their technical and operation capacity, through several methodologies, including training, hands-on technical assistance, design counseling and product development.
Our technical team includes fashion designers; graphic designers; food technologists; production engineers; patternmakers; product development officers among others. The technical personnel are backed up by our efficient administrative unit which ensures proper delivery of services.
TYPES OF ASSISTANCE OFFERRED
The Technical Services Department delivers assistance through the delivery of one to one assistance to clients and community groups through projects, with particular focus on the following areas:
- Fashion
- The importance of the Fashion Industry to the development of the economy has been established. Its significance is not only in terms of revenue generation at the global level, but also its potential for employment generation. As part of its support to the development of the industry, the Government of Jamaica has established a Fashion Resource Centre within the Jamaica Business Development Corporation.
- Food
- Agro-Processing is identified by World Bank consultants as one of the few areas where Jamaica has a competitive advantage. The Food Technician in delivering business advice and assistance guides and outlines the process for bringing a product to the market by educating clients about the regulations set by the Bureau of Standards and other regulatory bodies. This assistance lends to the creation of products that are in accordance with international standards and viable both locally and abroad.
- Craft
- Through the application of appropriate resources and innovation, our team of designers will ensure that your product satisfies the needs of the market. From “Waste to Profit”, through the use of indigenous, traditional and non-traditional raw materials, the Craft Resource Centre’s mandate is to design aesthetically pleasing and functional items based on the requirements of clients. These tasks are completed with emphasis on infusing products with a Jamaican identify and a consistent focus on the development of Banana Paper and other innovative products.
- Visual Communication
- Clients have the opportunity to liaise with Graphic artists and outline the goals and objectives of their respective products. These services are available to anyone regardless of the size of their business enterprise. The artists of the Centre have extensive experience in branding and the creation of a corporate or product identity through cohesive graphic illustrations.
